Should be interesting, as the Elrond of "The Hobbit", although just a small role in that film, has always seemed much different than the Elrond we meet in the trilogy, and for that matter the elves of Rivendell in The Hobbit are quite commical, as opposed to sad and serious.

It will be interesting to see how they translate it all to film. The Hobbit has many dark moments, but on the whole is also quite a bit more "light" than the trilogy. You can't well take all that away from THe Hobbit, as it will no longer be the Hobbit...but on the other hand most of the moviegoing audience is going to expect something more on the level of the trilogy. It will be hard to not piss off either the readers or the movie watchers. Jackson for the most part pulled it off with the trilogy....but of course he didn't have to compete against himself then. This time around Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson must live up to, not only the work of Tolkien, but also Jackson's previous work.

Ian Holm doesn't need to play a younger version of Bilbo. He found the ring in the Hobbit and as a result did not age at all for the next 60 years leading up to the Fellowship of the Ring

They can easily handly it it with stunt doubles. They have to double all the hobbits and dwarves anyhow, using small people for the side-by side shots with tall people. Thats how they did it most of the time in the trilogy.

Doug Jones Confirms Hobbit Casting…sorta

From spacecast.com (via Elda): Doug Jones, the actor who is famous for playing the elaborate creatures in Guillermo del Toro's movies (Pan in Pan's Labyrinth, Abe Sapien, in the Hellboy series) has announced that he will be in del Toro's next high-profile projects, The Hobbit and Frankenstein. "We have not had any conversations about what he wants [for The Hobbit]," Jones explains, "but he's 'wink-wink, nudge-nudged' me a couple times with that 'Yeah, yeah, The Hobbit, yeah, we'll see you,'" Jones told us. "I don't know what I'm doing or how many characters it will be, because he tends to like to use me the whole time depending."
