It used to be a common sense (aka: unwritten) rule that you DO NOT reveal the indenity of the person behind an alias without their permission.

Lately, i've been getting a little bit tired of posting as one of my sith accounts and then seeing somebody respond by calling me "Ceel." If I wanted every new member that comes to TGC who the man behind the mask is then i'd tell them myself. This level of consideration needs to be extended to everyone. The act of revealing other people's aliases belongs to the owner of the account alone.

That said, i'd like to continue by bringing up a related topic.

I think it would be a very good thing to see TGC return to the days when more of our members kept their aliases secret. Using a secret alias does several very important things that greatly improve the role playing experience. These things are:

1) Maintains the Individuality of each Alias:
If Darth Midian makes a post, 99% of you already know that its just General Ceel using a different name. That knowledge destroys the fantasy. Rather than Darth Midian being a character played by a unique individual, he suddenly becomes nothing more than a shell controlled by none other than the owner of TGC.If you keep your identity hidden your characters will feel more individual, and as a result more convincing and real.


2) It Makes The Galaxy Feel Bigger:
When you don't know who is behind the keyboard of every account it makes you feel like TGC is much much bigger than it already is. I'd much rather role play and post, both IC and OOC, in a community of individuals, rather than what feels like a community of clones.


3) It Keeps People Honest
Lets face it, people are less likely to talk about you behind your back if there is a possibility that you are listening. As a result keeping aliases secret can improve relationships across the TGC role playing galaxy.

If you reveal it to somebody you should do it in private, and only to people who want to know.

I don't want to know who plays most accounts. There are others who are like me. We'd rather not know. Knowing takes away some of the fun for us.
